Webinar | The Battle for an equitable and accountable PABS System

Third World Network, Geneva Global Health Hub and the People’s Health Movement invite you to a briefing exclusively for civil society. Activists following from the frontlines of negotiations of the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) System will be sharing what they have seen firsthand.

After years of hard-fought battle, the core pillar of the Pandemic Agreement is now under serious threat. The EU and its allies are backtracking from commitments made in Article 12 of the Pandemic Agreement. Equity, transparency and accountability of the PABS System are at risk as developed countries continue to gaslight, resist enforceable binding obligations, promote digital biopiracy and oppose fair and equitable benefit sharing. Instead of strengthening trust and solidarity, their current approach is to enable the continued extraction of pathogens and genetic sequence data without assured fair returns,  jeopardising global public health. There is no guarantee that the  sharing of pathogens and genetic sequence data will be subject to guaranteed, predictable benefit-sharing including vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics during public health emergencies of international concern.

The next meeting of the IGWG at the end of March will be decisive. We need your support to defend equity, secure binding benefit-sharing commitments, and protect the public health objectives at the heart of the Pandemic Agreement.
